Future Funk Mixtape

2010 has arrived and while i'm yet to be given the chance to buy a hoverboard, my old pal FUNK has certainly been providing some excitement of late.

as a genre it seems to be evolving now to include (or maybe just influence) a swathe of electronic, glitch hop, broken beat, chuggy, synthy, wonky productions - from all over the globe. so much development seems to have happened so quickly that it's difficult to predict where it's going to go next...so this isn't so much "future" as "now", really. um...sorry.

still, it's just under an hour of my current fave alt-funk tunes. i hope you enjoy it!

Tracklist:

Linkwood - Tears
The Sa-Ra Creative Partners - Souls Brother
Pure P - Fonky President
Architeq - Sleeping Bear Lament (James Pants Remix)
Debruit - 149 Dalston Airline
Fulgeance - Tribute To Masekela (FULGEANCE BICOQUET EDIT)
Modeselektor - 2000007 (Siriusmo Remix)
Dam Funk - Hood Pass Intact
Tom Central - Hillbrook Boogie
Souleance - Manana
Mr Scruff - Giant Pickle
Julien Dyne - Incredulous
Blackmonk - Monkmuse In Da House
Arcadion - Fly Vision
Proof Of Concept - It Was A Train (Jazzsteppa Remix)
Dorian Concept - Tropical Hands
Onra - My Comet

as always, if you like what you hear on this mix, go and buy more of the featuring artists' music (it'll be worth it - for each of them this stuff only touches the surface, trust me) and support quality independent labels. good music needs you.

UPDATE: i've just uploaded the mix to Soundcloud, too - for those of you who do that kind of thing...

Drilla's Free-Edits

i should probably spend a bit more time perusing the DJ History pages, because it's always chock-full of gems each time i do make a visit.

Drilla's work is a case in point. a couple of months ago i popped over to check out what was floating boats in chuggydiscobalearicland, and noticed he'd started a thread giving away an edit of his - a reworking of a Lack of Afro remix of a Diplomats of Solid Sound track. still with me? good...

it's a belter because it takes an otherwise quite tricky DJ's track and extends the intro out to something a bit more manageable than the original. it also rates highly because the original is so damn good! LOA's drums never fail to raise a smile here.

Diplomats of Solid Sound - If You're Wrong (Lack of Afro Remix) (Drilla's Edit)

not only that, but Drilla also puts up a re-edit of Breakestra's "Little Miss Funky Sole" for us to enjoy too. i think i prefer this to the Diplomats/LOA edit, it's immense...and every time i've dropped it at a party since, it's gone down a storm. the stretched-out intro break and drop into the horns are summink else; if you're spinning funk, you can't really go wrong with this.

Breakestra - Little Miss Funky Sole (Drilla's Edit)

finally, on a more downbeat tip, Drilla has recently dropped a Cymande edit - this time taking "Zion I" and dubbing it up, whilst maintaining the original melodic lifts. this is going to sound great in the summer, but until then, use it to warm yer frosty cockles.

Cymande - Zion I (Drilla's Edit)

GOOD FREE MUSIC - you can't really argue with that, can you? if you dig these be sure to pop over to DJ History and thank Drilla yourselves! oh, and check out the work he does with Drrtyhaze too - fine stuff.

Avé Blaste - New Perspectives 001 Mix

it's always nice being given a nudge towards a fresh little mixtape, and i think you can afford to give this one (at only 28mins long) a bit of space on your mp3 player of choice.

put out just today by the Keep Up! crew in advance of the second of their "New Perspectives" nights, this mix takes you on a nice little saunter through the warm, funk-tinged, wonky side of current electronica. Avé Blaste has done a fine job here, and happily wins a place in my heart for including the excellent (and old fave on the Badly Packed Kebab) Siriusmo - "Wow". always a winner.

get this on and help the winter thaw edge in. oh, and the details for New Perspectives event on Saturday night can be found below, too - if you're in the area, head along!
